Preston, Hertfordshire.

We headed to Preston to complete some of the ‘Kiss Me Quick’ series (a series devoted to the kissing gates of which there are many in this area. This route took in Wain’s Wood which is also know as Bunyan’s Dell where John Bunyan preached some of his sermons.

It’s also passed close by to a ‘lost’ village called Welei. Legend says that the inhabitants were known for their pagan beliefs and worship and so were not buried in consecrated ground, hence the name of one footpath we took called ‘Dead Woman’s Lane’ . It is much more likely however that the village disappeared about 1348/9 due to the Black Death and that bodies were buried in nearby fields for ease.’. I prefer the first explanation.
